Espreitem!

Today I'm chatting with a Portuguese jeweler: Carolina Curado. I had the chance to meet her in person while studying at Engenho e Arte Jewelry School, but it was after she left for Lisbon that I started to explore her website and fell in love with her original and expressive style.
I love the way Carolina explores natural organic shapes, combining in a perfect way the personality of brass with gems in pieces of bold lines and Art Nouveau inspiration. Have a look!

Tell us...
1. who is Carolina Curado?
I'm a former Biologist, who after the graduation in Biology (in Oporto's University) decided to study jewelry, a life time passion.
Although I was never an Art student, my heart was always a bit split between Science and jewelry. So then I decided to give it a try, and this days I create and sell my own jewelry, with a touch of biology sometimes!

2. have you become what you wanted to be when you grew up?
When I was little I had no idea of what I wanted to be! I loved animals (still do!), and for a moment I thought that I would become a vet… but no. I also loved beads and plasticine, and used to spend a lot of time creating whatever I wanted to. But I never had a clear idea of what I was going to be. Nowadays I fell completely fulfilled with what I do for a living, I'm very glad I chose jewelry instead of anything else. Now I know I made the right choice, and fortunately for me, in the right age!!!

3. what inspires you to create?
To be able to create a piece from the very beginning, when it is just an image in our mind, until the final details, when it is finished, it’s such an incredible felling, such an amazing process! It becomes almost a necessity, in the end that piece is part of a growing stage, and it will take you far ahead, to new things, new possibilities. It never ends, and that is just part of the magic of it!
And then you have an entire world to inspire you… everything around me can be an inspiration. But the most important thing is to stick with my own language when it comes to my work. I want to create quality jewelry, with a very unique approach, that also shows who I am as a designer.

4. your artistic media of choice.
In my work I explore brass as a raw material. Because it allows a better price for my jewelry, and I love the color of it, it has been my first choice when it comes to metal! I can do everything I would do with silver or gold, but I can make bigger pieces, without any worries of how much it will cost! Then I also love to mix pearls, corals, zircons, semi precious stones… a touch of color and different textures!

5. the favorite corner of your workspace.
The window! Of course that my working table is where I spend most of my time, so I love it and I hate it! It is definitely the most important corner, where almost everything happens… but my window is a big deal, it gives not just the precious light, but also that great moment to look at the sea and take a break!

6. a day at work.
I work alone. And I am my own boss. That is very good, but also demands a lot more dedication and discipline than a regular job. I have to get up early and work a regular schedule. In a normal day I can create new pieces, or just reproduce old ones to sell.

7. a business tip.
I fell that facebook is a very powerful tool these days. First it is free, then it allows you to reach a huge number of people, and so to spread your work very quickly. Then it also provides a good feedback, a very easy way to understand what is going well and what is not!
For me it was also very important the magazines. After a few publications, I think that I was able to reach more attention to my work as well. And obviously, having a blog or a web site is mandatory! Have all those things combined, and you are ready to go!
Last but not least, do what you like, and do it well! It may seem a cliché (nota, não sei como se escreve! lol), but it is the ultimate truth! When one does what he likes, he does it well! And with much more will and energy than anyone else! And then, just have fun with it.

8. an advice to your younger you.
You may have a lot of doubts in the way, but keep going, don't look back too much, and keep on working hard. Somehow it will happen! (and always be honest with you and others around you, that’s the right way to do it)

9. a plan to the future.
Having my brand bigger and stronger, not just in the Portuguese market but if possible, out there to! And also stay in love with jewelry, and be able to do better and better!

Let us know…
10. a personality that influences you.
Charles Darwin. I can only imagine how powerful it was to learn about Evolution in an Era that was completely unprepared to accept it (even today it is hard for so many people!), and then to remain firm with his theory when almost the whole world was against him. For me he is just one of the most brilliant minds ever lived!

11. a book you think everyone should read.
First, just read books!! It can even be the corniest romance, but if you like it, go for it! It will make wonders for you!
I think that everyone should read Lord of the Rings in the adolescence (or Harry Potter!!!) (or the Portuguese books Uma Aventura but in a much younger age!!). Then The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough, The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy.

12. an unforgettable movie.
Juno or The Royal Tenenbaums, there are too many good movies (or books) to pick only one. Just don't go for the Tree of Life or Melancolia, too depressing!!

13. a city to fall in love with.
London! I just love all the things about it!

14. a favorite food and drink.
Pasta! Just love it! I'm very simple wen it comes to the drink, just give me a juice and I will be happy!

15. a guilty pleasure.
Chocolate (isn't it everybody's guilty pleasure?)

  1. Muito interessante mesmo essa mistura de formas orgânicas com latão... Belíssimo trabalho!

  2. Adorei conhecer esta talentosa artista e o seu fascinante trabalho!
